The rapper’s tumultuous relationship with Tompkins went public back in late May, when a suspicious fire razed the rapper’s $1.4 million Dix Hills, Long Island, home. Tompkins was living in the house with Marquise at the time of the fire, and both suffered smoke inhalation as a result.
Tompkins blamed 50 for the fire, and told reporters hours after the inferno was extinguished that the rapper had threatened her life just days earlier. 50 denied he had anything to do with the blaze, and in June, filed a $20 million defamation suit against Tompkins in Connecticut. 50 has been questioned by authorities about the fire, and according to one of the arson investigators he met with, the rapper has been “very cooperative.”

DragonForce will be hitting the road in November for a nearly two-month tour, with Turisas as direct support. That trek commences November 1 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and wraps December 19 in Vancouver, British Columbia. … Nachtmystium and Wolves in the Throne Room will also be heading out on tour together starting in October. They have a dozen gigs booked from October 10 in Portland, Oregon, through October 25 in Chicago. …
Reunited Long Island hardcore heathens Vision of Disorder will be performing in New York on November 16. Joining them on the bill are Indecision, Overcast and Nassau Chainsaw this is one show you shouldn’t miss. … Ava Inferi plan to enter a recording studio in November to start work on their third LP, Blood of Bacchus. The album, which will feature the songs “A Witch She Was, the Witch I Am,” “Lights” and “Last Sign of Summer,” should be in stores early next year.

Beau Dozier profile: “I thought the fridge was kind of cool, and I thought that was a lot of fun,” Koepp said. “There’s going to be stuff in movies that people like and don’t like. Going into that one, I knew I was going to get hammered from a number of quarters. That movie is owned by millions and millions of people. “I would love to secretly do some work on a metal band’s album,” she said, adding that Underoath would be her first choice for a collaboration. “I wish I could just secretly do vocals, and nobody would know it’s me. I would love to just do a couple of screams. One time I was at soundcheck and I told my musical director that I really want to pig squeal, and he said, ‘Go ahead I don’t care.’ I didn’t want to, because I could see there were fans nearby, and he said, ‘Just do it.’ And I did, and these fans reacted. They were like, ‘Wow, that’s awesome I don’t even know what that is, but it’s cool.’ ”

In the weeks leading up to the release of their latest LP, Death Magnetic, Metallica did very little in the way of actual promotion for the effort. They didn’t make the late-night TV rounds or appear on any talk shows. The album’s September 12 release date came and went with very little fanfare and the record still went on to scan close to 500,000 units in just three days, earning Metallica their fifth-consecutive chart-topping debut.
Four weeks later, the album has passed the million-sold mark and will be at #5 on the Billboard albums chart next week. And even though they’re not hurting for publicity, Metallica will make their first North American live television performance of the year (they have appeared on TV in the U.K.). On October 16, the band will take the stage when the annual Los Premios MTV Latino America 2008 take over Guadalajara, Mexico. The awards, which will be held inside the Auditorio Telmex, will air live at 9 p.m. ET, only on MTV Tr3s. Metallica will be performing the first single from Death Magnetic, “The Day That Never Comes.”

Pain and his record company sent out cease-and-desist orders to put “Silver and Gold” on permanent pause, but its popularity was even greater than Pain’s official first single, “Can’t Believe It,” during its initial launch.
“That pushed the single back, then we had to push the album back,” Pain said. ” ‘Can’t Believe It’ was getting overtaken by ‘Silver and Gold.’ It was just a lot.”

Songwriter Beau Dozier: Asked about reports that earlier surgery was not as successful, Barker said, “It was a misunderstanding. I woke up from my surgery with no pain medication at one point! Imagine how that would feel! But the doctors here are amazing.”
As for how much longer he might be in the hospital, Barker optimistically said it shouldn’t be more than two weeks if all goes well. “I hope not much longer. I sit here and read books and watch TV,” he said. “I have had outstanding support from my family and friends. Shanna has been here as much as she could be. I couldn’t do it without them.”
Not only is he optimistic about his recovery, but Barker is ready to get back to work, and most importantly his family. “I can’t wait to get to work on my record. I lost one of my best friends in this crash,” he said. “I can’t wait to get back to writing and expressing myself, get back into the swing of things. I have so much stuff just jumbled in my head right now. I can’t wait!
“I’m trying to have a quick recovery and play the drums again and be able to hold my kids again,” he added.

What is it about metal that drew Lovato? She respects the musicianship that goes into crafting brutal tracks. “It’s so completely different from anything else,” she said. “You’ve got vocals that I can’t do, the double bass drums, the incredible guitar solos … every part of the band does more difficult stuff than your average rock band does. I listen to these bands, and I wish I could do all of that, but I can’t.”

According to Vibe magazine’s fans, Lil Wayne isn’t “The Best Rapper Alive.” He isn’t even in the top two. After weeks of online voting, Eminem was crowned the globe’s top MC in a tournament-style contest.
In a contest on the magazine’s Web site, 64 of today’s top rappers from MTV News’ reigning “Hottest MC in the Game” Kanye West toRick Ross, Nas and T.I. were given brackets, similar to NCAA basketball teams during March Madness. Fans began voting on head-to-head matchups in July, with MCs gradually being eliminated until Marshall Mathers was tapped as the ultimate victor this month, beating out Brooklyn lyric guru Jay-Z. Slim Shady received 69 percent of the votes in the finals. The magazine said more than 920,000 votes were cast.

“It’s obviously an honor to have won the fans’ support by being voted the Best Rapper Alive,” Em said in a statement released Tuesday (October 7). “I don’t think that there is any one rapper that is simply the best, though. Everyone who was in consideration and many others are the best at certain things, and at what they do. But since Vibe’s offering the distinction, hell yeah, I’ll accept!”

Tokio Hotel’s Bill Kaulitz said yet again that the group did not expect to walk away from the VMAs as winners. “I have no words!” he gushed after the show. “We are so surprised and excited. We never expected it!”
Celebs also weighed in on whose performance best rocked the show. “Hills” star Lauren Conrad said, “Actually, [my favorite performance] was Kid Rock,” who performed his hit “All Summer Long.” “It was amazing. He vocally sounded amazing. His performance was so great.”
